![]() Numbering more than half a million, this is about five times the size of the population of Grenada, and twice the size of that of Barbados ( Foner, 2001 US Census Bureau, 2012). New York City’s five boroughs, particularly Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, host one of the largest populations of West Indian immigrants in the United States. The recruitment of English-speaking, skilled workers by the United States since 1965 – coupled with barriers against Commonwealth immigration erected by Britain in the 1960s – has encouraged the migration of English-speaking Caribbean peoples (West Indians) to the United States, and has led to the creation of significant West Indian communities there. ![]() In spite of the issue of brain-drain and other concerns associated with the departure of citizens, outward migration is not seen as a problem from the Caribbean perspective, but as an institutionalized strategy for economic betterment. Migration is a perennial feature of the Caribbean existence, and one that distinguishes this region from others in the western hemisphere where emigration is relatively recent ( Chaney, 1987).
